Is A Fish Right for You?

So your thinking about getting a fish. Well, you've come to the right place. This page will ask you the questions to see if you have what it takes to get a pet fish. Now, some may think pet fish are easy to care for. In some sense that is true but in other parts it isn't. Depending on the type of fish you get, it may take a lot or a little work to care for them but what is true for every fish is, they need as much care as a dog or cat. They may not show that they do but they do. So let's get started.

Do you have the space for the aquarium?

So first things first, do you have the space for an aquarium? Some people wanting a fish may not realize that aquariums can take up lots of space unless your getting a Betta fish then their homes aren't that big since they perfer to be alone. But tanks can vary by gallons. The smallest tank that would be the east to care for would be a small fish bowl, these aren't considered tanks but they do just as well if you are only buying one fish, of course. The biggest tank you can have is  around 210 gallons, some can be more. This type of aquarium is best for marine aquariums or large fish. If your thinking about getting four or less fish, a 5-10 gallon tank would suffice. These provide room to swim and also can hold various plants and decor for your fish. Just remeber no matter what size the tank or aquarium is, it will always take up space so make sure you have space for the type of aquarium you want.

Do you have the money to spend on supplies?

Despite what most people tell you, fish aren't cheap. They can cost as much as a cat or dog, their supplies can be more depending if you decide to get a large tank and many fish. Most people spend $35 or more on fish supplies depending on what they need. Special fish like the GloFish, need extra supplies and care so they tend to be more costly in the long run. However, small fish like the Goldfish tend to have less needs but supplies for them can still be costly, from food to filters, the money can add up. So to save time and money, save the money you get or earn and place it in a jar and keep track of how much money you save. Once you have determined if the money you saved is the right or more then the right amount, you can go shopping for your fish. But remember, despite the stuff you've heard from your obsessed fish friends, they aren't cheap nor is their supplies so keep an open mind and wallet when you want a fish.

Have You Done Your Research?

Now, depending on the type of fish you want, you need to do some research on the types of pet fish (Go to my page to find out what kinds of fish there are). Pet fish can vary in size, shape and color. They also can vary in cost. If you done your research on the type of fish you want, then you shouldn't have any problems getting your fish. However, take a shopping list and care sheet with you to remind yourself to get the needed supplies for the fish as well as picknig the healthiest fish out. Remember, do plenty of research on your fish, it's care, the tank and everything else. The more you know, the better.

Congrats! Your Ready!

If you have answered yes to these questions and have done everything you need to do to get a fish then welcome to the wonderful world of water critters. Enjoy your fish and keep on swimming!
